She is the mother of a brother and three sisters. Her father was a diplomat, and family members frequently moved. They resided in a variety of nations around the world, including Germany, Japan, Greece, and Germany. When they settled in Maryland, Harden went to Surrattsville High School in Clinton. In the fall of 1980, she enrolled at the University of Texas at Austin. She received a bachelor's degree in theatre in that same year. Harden was accepted to NYU's Tisch School of the Arts 1988 in order to earn her MFA.
